Despite a sharply shrunk budget, the Summervibes organisation wants to go big at the annual campus festival. The programme includes Goldkimono (described by the Lowlands festival as ‘feel-good pop and good-natured hip-hop’), student jazz band Able Bodied Seamen and hip-hop by Waga Collective.

This year the campus festival will be held on Thursday 19 June, says Chris van Kreij of the organisation. ‘On the same day as the WeDay, the sports day for WUR employees. So when the sports are done, everybody is welcome at Summervibes for music, snacks and drinks.’

This year there will be three stages, says Van Kreij. ‘Of course a big music stage, where Goldkimono will perform. Later this year, they will perform at Lowlands as well, one of the biggest festivals of the Netherlands, but first they are here with us on campus.’ Also DansMaar (the DJs of rowing association Argo) and an Abba cover band will perform on this stage. Then there are the so-called terrace stage and the science circus. ‘The terrace stage will feature speakers such as Harm Edens from Dit Was Het Nieuws (a Dutch satire TV programme, red.), who recently wrote a book on climate change. And Teun van de Keuken, who for years produced the TV programme Keuringsdienst van Waarde, launched the chocolate brand Tony Chocoloneley and wrote a critical book on the food industry. There will be music as well. Student jazz band Able Bodied Seamen for example, and local hip-hop group Waga Collective, who will be on stage with soil drills.’

Collaboration

The science circus programme is organized by the EWUU alliance, Van Kreij explains. ‘That is a partnership of TU Eindhoven, WUR, Utrecht University and UMC Utrecht. Expect inspiring presentations that capture the imagination. No heavy substantive lectures… it remains a festival, of course, so it should be fun.’ Also the carousel returns to the festival grounds again. ‘Like last year, it will be provided by corporate HR.’

The first edition of Summervibes in 2023 was pretty wet. Last year, the weather was already better, but Van Kreij hopes that the sun will really shine this year. ‘Three times is a charm, they say. We have an advantage, because during WeDay the weather is always good. Let’s hope it is the same this year.’
