Knit and Purl: Knitting Cafe on Campus

Not just during Surf your Stress-week, but also in Orion every Monday.

Insert, loop, bring back, let slip. And don’t be afraid to drop the occasional stitch because many mistakes can be corrected. Furthermore, aren’t irregularities part of the charm? In fact, knitting is like life itself but more calming.

That, at least, was the sentiment among the participants in the knitting workshop during the Surf your Stress week. From novice knitters to veterans, Ruur Boersma helped them all just as she does every Monday from 11 to 14 hrs during her Knitting Café on Orion’s ground floor. ‘The extra living experience I have over students is sometimes helpful.’

Something small

All are welcome during her Knitting Café, including those who would rather socialise than count stitches. She starts by sharing a tip for beginners: ‘Most people think a scarf is a good project to begin with. But it is not, a good scarf requires quite some length, which takes time. It is better to start with something small.’

With this comment, Boersma latches on to fashion trends:  de Volkskrant published a lengthy background story (behind a paywall, sorry) about the emergence of knitkini’s and other knitted tiny items. Even Kardashian top model, Kendall Jenner, was seen sporting one. Super-hot, it seems.
