Wageningen has a new (small) festival: Over Yonder. ‘Why go big and massive when you could go small and great?’ the announcement states. The two-day festival is all about “daring” music.
Biology student Nike Soffree is one of the festival’s organisers on behalf of popUPop. ‘We aim to push Wageningen’s musical boundaries with this festival. The idea emerged after a partnership with the Australian-born singer-songwriter Dan Tuffy (who has been living in Wageningen for some 25 years now) and Wageningen concert organisers popUPop.’
‘Over yonder is the American South’s term for “over there”. This tongue-in-cheek name refers to genres that have remained underexposed in Wageningen, such as Australian Americana, drum ‘n jazz, beat poetry or poetry beats, punk-infused pop or timeless new folk. The festival has two headliners from over yonder: drummer Cru The Dynamic and hip-hop poet Leo Coltrane from New York.’
‘But many local performers, such as Wageningen’s Michiel Wallinga, will also take the stage. His musical snowonasphalt project is a solo show combining spoken words, sampled beats and distorted guitar solos. Loki Project will also be present, as will artist and songwriter Lieke Dijkstra, who plays minimalist indie with her band. Their lyrics are accompanied by electric guitar, bass, dubbed singing and the Chinese Guzheng harp. Come one, come all!’
