More visitors and better weather: one big party.

Photographer María Joaquina Acosta took pictures of the second edition of campus festival Summervibes. Omnia manager Chris van Kreij, one of the festival’s organisers, looks back on a successful edition. ‘The moshpit at Prince S. and the Goat was a nice highlight.’

He is tired but satisfied, Van Kreij tells the morning after the festival. ‘This edition there was an afterparty for the first time. That was at Unitas and lasted until four in the morning. I had to go and take a look there, although I didn’t stay till the end.’

At 4pm, the festival kicked off by the brass band Broken Brass. Soon the field was pretty full with mostly employees who came to ‘extend their working day’, says Van Kreij. ‘For the first part of the festival, employees were in the majority. Around dinner time, pretty much after Miracle—a Queen Tribute band—was done performing, some of the employees went home. At that time it was also raining briefly. But it soon cleared up again, and more and more students were coming to the festival. During Prins S. en de Geit, things really went wild. There was a moshpit, which was great to see.’

Party band Daredevils was booked as the closing act on the advice of students in the Summervibes organisation, says Van Kreij. ‘That was a good choice. It was one big party, a kind of open-air student pub at sunset.’

Van Kreij saw students, teaching and research colleagues and other campus staff making it a party together. ‘People from all kinds of different backgrounds, positions, ages and cultures were partying together. ‘

Also the weather was more upbeat than last year, when it was a particularly wet party. ‘It was warm, mostly dry and we had a nice evening sun. Of course lying in the grass in the sunshine is the dream picture, but we’ll save that dream for next year.’

The festival will probably be held on 19 June 2025 then, Van Kreij says. ‘Just pencil it in your diary.’
