Last weekend, 17 student teams from Wageningen participated in the 50th edition of the Batavieren race, the largest relay race in the world – according to the organizers. Participants run 175 kilometres in 25 laps from Nijmegen to Enschede, where the race ends at the athletics track.
From Wageningen there were teams from student societies such as KSV Franciscus and SSR-W, as well as from many student sports associations like Woest (the survival club) and the athletics association Tartletos. The 25 best runners from each university form a team that represents its university, competing against other university teams for a place on the podium. The WUR team came in third (Groningen came in first, and Eindhoven second).
In the evening there is traditionally a big party for all the athletes and supporters, this year about 13,000. Resource student editor Susan van Weperen was one of the runners on the WUR team and she took some photos along the way.
