Lab materials for North Korea

A machine for making ice, PCR apparatus for DNA research, a sterile flow cabinet, an autoclave and chemicals.

These are some of the things being transported in the sea container that left Wageningen en route for North Korea on 27 April. The shipment is part of a potato project funded by the EU and headed by the researcher Maarten Jongsma. Most of the EU money is going on training the North Korean researchers in Wageningen but there is also 60,000 euros available for improving the Korean agricultural research institute’s outdated lab. It took Jongsma around seven months to do the paperwork for the shipment.
