Being an active member of a student association is definitely worth each ounce of sweat you shed, blogger Kaavya Raveendran found out. ‘You get a family to share your joys and sorrows with.’
Student associations really add spice to your student life. At WUR, one can join numerous of such groups: they are divided by varying interests, but united by their sheer enthusiasm. From sustainability to the farmer’s voice, to internalization, to inspiration, or simply the pride of representing your own culture — the range of issues addressed and activities organized by students is endless. And it’s a big advantage for you if you are exposed to such an environment at an early stage.
Motivated people
We all agree that our Uni life moulds our personality and substantiates our knowledge, and the first step to this is being ‘aware’. The mission of these associations is well heard and seen through activities, promotions, and the real boon of this era: social media. It is extremely easy to find a group of motivated people that you can relate to, and in no time you can become one of them. (And live happily ever after? Something like that!)
The best part of being an active member of an association is that you actually get to quote Dumbledore: ‘Help is always given to those who ask for it’
The journey of being an active member/board member teaches you more things than you can imagine. It gives you a purpose, motivation to hustle and most importantly: an opportunity to make a difference. You get in touch with many people for their help or collaboration, and in turn you help out the people who come to you for support. The best part is that you actually get to quote Dumbledore: ‘Help is always given to those who ask for it.’
Great on your resume
Your people skills surely develop and alongside that, you get a family to share your joys and sorrows with. Like-minded people travelling in the same boat as you, imagine the kind of connection you can develop. You never feel alone and never feel bored! Perfect package? I think so. Whichever association you work with, the kind of work and hours you put in really helps build your working skills. Moreover, it looks great on your resume!
From shy to fun
I write this blog after completing one board year and have another ongoing. It is definitely worth each ounce of sweat and blood you shed. (Too dramatic? Just kidding, no blood, only sweat!) People looking to reform themselves from an introvert and shy person to an easy-going and fun person, give yourself this opportunity that you’ll be thankful for later. You learn about all there is to know and can choose to do full time or half time board. Full time not being very financially friendly for international students, part-time options serve as a great opportunity to make the most of it.
We are surrounded by a plethora of experiences waiting to unveil. Even if there is a single spark of motivation in you, go for it and cease the one you want. It will change your life.
