Student rowing association Argo organises a pentathlon to raise funds: a challenging event made up of running, cycling, swimming, playing cards and rowing. SSR-W raises funds through their annual Rijn Challenge.
During the Rijn Challenge, SSR-W members can challenge others to jump into the waters of the Rhine for a sum of at least five euros, says Sigrid Verkerk, SSR-W chair. ‘We alternate between the MS Fund and the ALS foundation.’ The Rijn Challenge is organised by Komma, SSR-W’s community committee. Last year, a total of 1300 euros was raised. ‘We hope to raise an equally impressive sum this year’, says Verkerk. The SSR-W members will dive into the Rhine on 24 April.
Pentathlon
Argo is to organise a pentathlon, former chair Luwe Groot reveals. ‘The pentathlon is a former tradition that we would like to rekindle. May as well link it to charity.’ Members can cycle, run, swim, row and play cards at the weekend of 22 and 23 April. The dedicated web page aims to raise funds for charity. How many people will participate remains to be seen, says Groot. ‘All competition rowers have a competition that weekend, so we will, unfortunately, have to do without them.’
Choosing ALS as their charity was not difficult, says Groot. ‘All charities are important, but ALS affects muscles that fail one after the other, making it harder for people to move and exercise. It is important that those who are healthy and vital reflect on that.’
