Marine biologist Cindy van Damme (in the red helmet) of the Institute for Marine Resources & Ecosystem Studies IMARES counts the mackerel and Atlantic horse mackerel. This enables her to calculate how many fish have spawned in the Atlantic this year and how big the population is. Then it is worked out how much mackerel and horse mackerel can be commercially fished without endangering the populations. The end result is a fish quota advice to the European Union. Anne Martens
