First-year students are idealists

A survey conducted by Resource among first-year students during the introduction days shows that the desire to contribute to a better world was the main reason to choose Wageningen for four out of ten students. The same number feels their studies in Wageningen will open the way to meaningful jobs. These are usually the same students; the respondents were able to select multiple answers.

Six out of every ten students selected Wageningen for the study programme. The same percentage values the broadness of the programmes. Less than one in ten students considered their employability or expected earnings when choosing their university. In spite of the high level of idealism, a small number of first-year students indicates they decided to study at WUR for lack of a better plan.

The uniqueness of Wageningen study programmes is the reason one-third of all new students chose Wageningen. Many programmes are unique to this university and cannot be followed anywhere else.  The majority (six out of every ten) of students cites the excellent reputation Wageningen has and how the organisation presents itself as a reason to choose this university. The presentation refers to the WUR open days.

City

The city itself is the reason for one in five students to study in Wageningen. What qualities the city has that motivate this choice is not clear through a lack of follow-up questions. The survey was conducted during the two information markets that were held in Belmonte Arboretum during the introduction. A total of 211 first-year students completed the survey.
