All students and teaching staff at WUR will soon receive a survey about the use of artificial intelligence in teaching, Education dean Arnold Bregt has announced.
‘Artificial intelligence is an important theme in the new Strategic Plan. In Education and Learning Sciences, they are already working on projects about AI in education. This survey is a kind of baseline measurement, to see what role generative AI is already playing in Wageningen education, and how students and teachers use it.’
The survey will be sent to all students and teachers by email in the course of period 1. This is not the usual approach, says Bregt. ‘We are not in the habit of just sending questionnaires to everyone. It is really unusual for us to do this, and that says something about the potential impact of generative AI on education.’
Questions
Generative AI software such as ChatGPT or Gemini can produce text, create images or scan and summarize the scientific literature, for example, on instructions given by a user. Some programs can write complete essays or literature reviews. The technology poses challenges as well as offering opportunities for science and education, and accordingly raises many questions. Earlier this year, the annual ICAB conference was all about how AI techniques could be used constructively and as an aid in higher education.
The first results are expected around the end of October.
