Wet campus on AID opening day

Over two thousand new students started their Annual Introduction Days (AID) in Wageningen on Friday, 16 August. After being welcomed by Mayor Floor Vermeulen and rector magnificus Carolien Kroeze, it was time for the Campus Games. These games offer AID participants the opportunity to get to know each other, the campus and Wageningen associations and clubs.

A first-year student in Landscape Architecture summarises Vermeulen and Kroeze’s speeches: ‘Take your studies seriously, but make sure you are active outside of your studies as well. They also said we are the future.’

After the speeches, it was time for the first real item on the programme: The Campus Games. Wageningen clubs and organisations endeavoured to spark first-year students’ enthusiasm for extracurricular activities. There was cotton candy, pizzas and slushies to lure the participants into a game of blindfolded football or the inflatable obstacle course. During the intervals, associations and organisations presented themselves.

The rain started coming down in sheets at around two-thirty in the afternoon, causing the students to flock to the associations’ marquees. Some groups sought shelter in Orion and Forum, while a handful of diehards continued the games. ‘We are already soaked anyway.’
